Three hundred and twenty percent organic growth in under a year sounds like a headline written for a pitch deck. Here's what actually caused it.
- We cut 40% of the site's pages. Thin, overlapping content was splitting authority across near-duplicate URLs. Consolidating them into fewer, stronger pages helped more than any new content we wrote.
- Search intent came before keyword volume. We picked topics by what someone actually needs when they type the query, not by search volume alone.
- Internal linking got treated as a real project, not an afterthought — every new article linked to and from at least three existing ones.
- We stopped chasing "content freshness" updates that didn't change the substance of the page. Google noticed; so did readers.
- Page speed work outperformed two months of link building. Sometimes the highest-leverage SEO task is an engineering ticket.
The two things that didn't move anything: guest post link exchanges, and rewriting meta descriptions on pages that were already ranking fine. Worth knowing before you spend a quarter on either.
